Cheap Tickets

Here is how I go about purchasing cheap airline tickets. I can almost always find lower fares than anyone else I have ever come up against. Sometime it might take me an hour or two, but if you can knock an $800 cross country fare down to $250 for an hour of searching, it is worth it.

Here are some of my tips:

I signup to the major airline weekly special emails and watch their specials and sales to keep my eye out for a deal for an airfare of where I want to go.

I check out Orbitz , Expedia, and Travelocity and note the lowest fare of the three. Generally, I find Orbitz to have the lowest fares, but if I look at the hotel and air packages, then I have found some real bargains on Expedia and Travelocity.

I will then look at the carriers that don't show up on the three big travel search engines. I look at SouthWest, JetBlue and some of the smaller regional carriers.

I will then check out some of the specials on Cheap Tickets, Discountfares.com, and other such sites. Once in a while I will find a lower fare there..

If I have enough time, I will check with an airfare consolidator. I have had great luck finding great deals on international flights through these guys, but be careful of the restrictions, because these fares are very inflexible and if you have to make a change, it will cost you often more than the ticket.

If I have flexibility in my travel times, I will then try Hotwire and Priceline.

On Priceline, I will take the lowest fare I found on my other searches and submit a price 40% lower than my other lower price. I have seldom got Priceline to accept my lower price, but once in a while, you get a bargain.

If I still can't find a great deal, I will then consider flying to a neighboring airport. Look at all three New York area airports. Consider surrounding airports besides Logan airport in Boston . You may have to drive for an hour or two, but if you can save $600 on your airfare, it might be worth it.

The other trick I will look at is to break the flight into two different segments. I live in the West and there are always cheap flights to and from Las Vegas . If I can get a cheap flight on SouthWest or AmericaWest to Vegas, I may find a great rate back east on a different airline.

I am also not opposed to taking a red-eye. You can get great rates and if you take a good pillow, earplugs, and a eye-mask, you can actually get a good night of sleep and you save the cost of a hotel!

Safe journeys!
